"Waiting for Moments of Gladness" is a large print consisting of 28 separate printings, mostly stone and photo plate lithography with one woodcut impression. The original concept for this piece was one of balance or harmony of opposites with a mix of male and female oriented symbols and the obvious elements of fire and water. The characters written on the model's back were taken from a traditional Chinese poem and were translated for me as "A secret that is not openly admitted". A rather vague yet suggestive phrase which I hope will allow the viewer to interject their own idea's of undivulged or hidden secrets. The image of a fish in a pond, appearing in the upper portion of the print, exists as a work in it's own right titled "By the Water's Edge", commissioned by the Honolulu Printmakers for their 1998 Gift Print. Initially I felt the composition of that work suggested the symbol of Yin and Yang or the balance of opposites. "Waiting for Moments of Gladness" slowly took form based on "By the Water's Edge" over a year and a half period.
